Typical Australian Souvenirs and Gifts from Australia

Updated on June 13, 2011

Australian souvenir ideas: what are the best Aussie gifts?

When you visit Australia you want to make sure you take a typical Australian souvenir or gift with you back home.

It does not matter where your plane touches the ground in the land down under: you will want to take some of that Australian feeling with you. You cannot take a kangaroo with you but a pluche kangaroo is a nice start, in particular for kids.

Just have a look through this article to make sure you're packing some Australian souvenirs or typical Australian gifts in your luggage when you fly home. No worries!

Examples of Australian souvenirs are Aboriginal art, pluche Australian animals and Australian opals.

Aboriginal art

What could be more Australian than a work of art from the native population of this continent? The aboriginals have their own style of decorating didgeridoos and boomerangs with dotted patterns. They look great if you hang them against one of your living room walls. They also make a great gift for those who appreciate foreign cultures.

Be aware though that not all of the aboriginal art that you see has actually been made by aboriginals. If you want to support aboriginals with your purchase then make sure you buy an Australian souvenir that has actually been made by aboriginals. This is indicated on the package of the product or you can buy something at stores that specialize in aboriginal art.

Australian road signs

You can see them frequently along the Australian roads. No, I'm not talking about kangaroos this time. I mean those yellow road signs that tell you where to go and what animals to watch out for. Kangaroos ahead!

You can buy these as decoration but you can also attach them to the inside of your car window. Those road signs have a suction cup in front so outsiders can look at them through your car window. Some of these road signs have very creative messages to warn people not just for animals on the road but also for your little brother, your annoying sister.. or, yourself!

Australian opals

Australia has various types of opals that are not found anywhere else in the world. Opals can be found all over Australia in mining towns as Coober Pery, Andamooka and Lightning Ridge. Australia is well-known for its black opal and boulder opal which are usually green and blue. You can also go for white opal (which is rather white or light-colored) or crystal opal (which can be colorful but not like black or boulder opal).

You can find opal shops in the major cities of Australia. These opal shops mostly sell jewellery with Australian opals in them. Occasionally you can also find opals that are not part of jewellery. These are relatively unpolished, if that is what you prefer.

Opals are a pricey souvenir or gift but definitely worth considering if they fit into your budget. They say diamonds are forever but perhaps that was without giving opals any consideration?

Australian T-Shirts

T-Shirts are a great way to show that you've been doing some traveling lately. These Australian souvenirs are really the easiest to find. You will come across them in any Australian tourist shop.

You can find T-Shirts with typical Australian sceneries, such as the Great Barrier Reef and Uluru, and animals, such as kangaroos, koalas and wombats. Other T-shirts feature local landmarks, such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Sydney Opera House and Flinders Street Station in Melbourne.

Australian hats

An Australian hat is an iconic piece of headwear that also suits those who venture outside of Australia. They are a great reminder of the outback and the Australian jackaroos and jillaroos that wear them. You don't need any work experience on an Australian farm to look great with an Australian hat!

Be sure to look for these slouch hats or cork hats when you're in Australia. If you want something more ordinary, go for a cap with an Australian decoration on it.

Pluche kangaroos and pluche koalas

These pluche kangaroos or pluche koalas make a great gift for kids back home. You can also find the wombat, the platypus or the crocodile as pluche souvenir in Australia.

And so much more...

Basically any product that you can think of is being sold with an Australian print on it. A pillow with a koala? A duvet cover with the Australian flag? A beach towel with a kangaroo? You can find it all in Australia!
